Way back, when I was working for Lernout & Hauspie (L&H), that is before the L&H assets were acquired by ScanSoft, now Nuance, one of my functions as Technical Project Manager was to do a comprehensive comparison testing between ViaVoice, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, L&H Voice Xpress, and Microsoft speech recognition (Microsoft Office XP and Windows XP). If you are able to get ViaVoice working even reasonably well, despite whatever accuracy you were or were not getting, you were the exception to the rule. Not easy when going from ViaVoice to Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Changing versions of speech recognition generally means giving up old habits and acquiring new ones. However, being a ViaVoice user you may find that becoming accustomed to Dragon NaturallySpeaking will likely have a little steeper learning curve for you. It's cheaper to go with DNS 12 Premium and then select a third-party add-on, such as VoiceComputer or KnowBrainer, depending upon your needs and/or specific requirements.Īs far as recognition accuracy is concerned, DNS 12 runs circles around ViaVoice and is much easier to use.

The Professional versions of DNS are not only expensive, but looking at your requirements, are generally unnecessary. You can get away with DNS 12 Home, as noted in the infomercials by Nuance, which are sadly not particularly stellar or well done, but I generally, and most others on the forum also, would not recommend going with DNS Home or DNS Basics. As far as versions are concerned, the likelihood is that you probably don't need anything other than DNS 12 Premium. A lot has changed over the years.Īlso, your microphone may have work just fine with ViaVoice, but depending upon the model of the Logitech microphone that you're using, it may not be suitable for DNS. You may require more than simply installing DNS Re: your current system. If you've been using ViaVoice this long, then I would hazard a guess that your current hardware configuration is also in the dark ages. You can't even get a copy of it now and it definitely doesn't support anything other than Windows XP 32-bit.

Lastly, ViaVoice was discontinued in terms of upgrading many, many years ago. However, remember that lacking specifics, it's like calling up your auto mechanic and telling him or her that your car does not start. The more specific you can be, the better we can assist you. Please be specific about your CPU make, model and speed (i.e., Core2tm Duo E8400, Core2tm Quad, Sandy Bridge - 2600, Ivy Bridge - latest and greatest Intel processors). However, before recommending upgrading to Dragon NaturallySpeaking, I/we need to know what your computer hardware specifications are (i.e., CPU make, model, speed, total amount of RAM). DNS 12 has several speech models that will accommodate most users systems. Unless you can find a Nuance vendor (reputable Nuance-certified) who still happens to have a previous version of DNS on the shelf and is willing to part with it, you're better off going with DNS 12. Stay away from eBay, and beware of geeks bearing gifts. Those who usually sell older versions of DNS, or even current versions of DNS, are unreliable and unethical. Why you might find someone willing to sell their older version of DNS (i.e., 10.1 or 11.5), I do not recommend it. When new versions are released, previous versions are discontinued.
